Therapy at your convenience

So, you want to work with me, but maybe you live in another part of Missouri, or maybe even Kansas.

Or maybe you live relatively close to the office but that rush hour traffic on the way home from work leaves you stressing whether or not you’ll arrive in time for your session.

Or maybe you want therapy to be even more convenient and meet during your lunch hour or from the comfort of your bedroom without worrying about having to put on “real clothes” – I get it.

Online therapy is the answer to all your problems and available to all residents in Missouri and Kansas. Check out my online portal to set up a free 15-minute consultation call, and let’s get started.

How do you set up an online therapy session?

First, we will start with a risk-free 15-minute phone consultation to explore what brings you to therapy, what you’re hoping to accomplish, and make sure we are a good fit for one another.

Then, we pick a day and time for your first session. I’ll send some documents for you to fill out and sign electronically through the patient portal. I will then send you a secure link for your online session via a HIPAA secure telehealth platform known as Sessions. You don’t have to download any new apps or programs – you simply log on at the time of your session.

Here are some good guidelines for a telehealth session:

If followed, online sessions can be made just as effective and private as face-to-face sessions.

First, make sure you have reliable WiFi, data, and/or signal. This is VITAL because, without it, the flow of the session will be interrupted. Therapy is all about being seen and heard, so this is a must.

Second, give yourself time before the session starts to find a quiet place and organize your thoughts. Feel free to have a list of items ready you want to cover that session.

Third, find a good spot to sit for online sessions and make sure it’s a private space. I also suggest utilizing headphones to ensure the privacy of your session. Popular places for online sessions include the following:

  • Bedroom – with the door closed (you can put a DO NOT DISTURB sign up if needed).
  • Car – if your house is full of other people or you want to meet during your lunch break, this is a great option for privacy. Make sure you are parked somewhere near reliable Internet or a good spot for data use.
  • Home office – super convenient since you can take a break from working but still have privacy while others might be moving around the house.

Fourth, be flexible. Technology sometimes sucks, so you may have to endure dropped calls, frozen screens, or video delays. We will discuss multiple different backup plans to ensure that the session continues despite interruptions.

Finally, be adaptive. If you’d hoped to sit in your bedroom for sessions, but the connection is slow, take time in the days between sessions to find a better place. If possible, ask your parents, roommates, partner, or with whomever you live for support in making sure you are in an ideal space every week to get the most out of the session.

Think maybe you’d prefer in-person individual therapy instead? Check out this page to see if it sounds like a better fit. Also, you can always do a mix of both!
